[+] The Four Work Packages of the ScaleUP Project
- Intelligent Agents:
Members: Hani Hagras, Areej Malibari, Aysenur Bilgin (Researcher Interest: Daniyal Al-Ghazzawi).
Description: The focus of this work package is in the enablement of intelligent agents within the overall ScaleUp scope using appropriate methods and models. Of particular interest is the use of agent based learning that allows behavioural evolution and adaptation over time in light of dynamic real?world environments.
- Intelligent Video Systems:
Members: Hani Hagras, Mohammed Ghanbari, Daniyal Al-Ghazzawi,? Bob Yao (Researcher Interest: Areej Malibari)
Description: The investigation of this work package is focused on the intelligent acquisition, processing and distribution of video and / or its related (extracted, ?tagged, etc.) information that can be used to enrich the information landscape of intelligent environments. Object recognition, identification and tracking are prime examples of the kind of information that can be produced by the se kinds of systems.
- Adjustable Autonomy / HCI:
Members: Vic Callaghan, Michael Gardner, Mohammed Al-Haddad,? Anasol Pena Rios (Researcher Interest: Mohammed Al?Haddad)
Description: This work package explores the very personal balance between ?autonomy and user control that can be adjusted statically and at run time. Incorporated into this is a great deal of human?computer interfacing, including (but not limited to brain?computer interfaces, mixed reality and physiological monitoring).
- Infrastructure & Formal Methods:
Members: Martin Henson, James Dooley, Abdullah Al-Ghamdi,? Luke Whittington (Researcher Interest: Mohammed Al?Haddad)
Description: This work package aims to investigate the overall infrastructure and organization that is required to scale up current intelligent environment methods and?understanding to a large scale. This can be specified and modelled using formal methods that in turn influence middleware construction, reliable operation and optimization.
[+] Facilities? of the ScaleUP Project
- iKAU:
Space is currently being sought by KAU partners to begin construction of an experimental Intelligent Environment similar to the iSpace at UOE. In support of this, an internal document entitled “A Guide to Intelligent Spaces: Creation Augmentation" was written by UOE at the request of KAU to assist in this task.
- iClassroom:
Funding has been secured by UOE to carry out the construction of an intelligent classroom. ?The resulting iClassroom is currently being deployed / developed and is scheduled for completion during the Summer 2011. ScaleUp is one of the projects that this facility is being developed to support and will provide a rich space for experimentation and education. This work has also provided two mobile education platforms (in partnership with the MiRTLE project) for deployment in other spaces at UOE (providing a setup for remote education). In addition, this work is also developing immersive display pods (one to be deployed in the iSpace and another elsewhere at UOE) that will also permit remote education and will form self?contained intelligent environments for use as experimental "hubs" (intended for WP2). The significance of this work to ScaleUp is highlighted by the fact that, upon completion, we will have the capability to interlink ~6 spaces over the UOE campus – thus achieving a large scale IE.
[+] The Expected Goals of the Cooperation Project
- Training the faculty members abroad.
- Twinning the two universities in research and publishing joint research.
- Planning to build a center of excellence such as a center for artificial intelligence.
[+] The Procedures Following the Contract Signature
- Training a number of academic members of our college at the University of Essex by supervising PhD students using the standards and criteria adopted by the University of Essex. (Training requires the academic member to attend 3 training sessions (2-6 weeks each session).
- A number of the University of Essex graduates will be joined to this program by paying the costs of their studies (Master or PhD) in order to build more communication between the two universities and to have more collaborative researches.
- Students will be asked to submit a number of joint researches (Master students – in one-year time and PhD students in three-year time) supervised by one academic member of the King Abdulaziz University (obtaining the training course is obligatory in the case of the PhD program only) and another academic member from the University of Essex.
- All the published research will be joint research and will be in the field of Artificial Intelligence that may be used to establish of a center of excellence.
[+] Rationale for Choosing The Post-Graduate Students for Achieving The Targeted Goals
- The academic members need the help of a teaching assistant or an employee in achieving the scientific research. Thus, hiring a master student is much cheaper than having an official employee to do the same job.
- Any academic member usually needs a stimulus that motivates him in doing the scientific research in time. Thus, the post-graduate student is the best choice so that everything can be accomplished in time.
- FCIT can make contracts with these students according to the number of years required to finish such projects so that the FCIT can utilize the results of such projects.
- Since the higher studies at the University of Essex is based on research projects and not on courses, so this project will guarantee publishing a number of joint research projects which are pre-requisites for students to obtain the master degree.
- The strategy of choosing the post-graduate students provided the opportunity to enroll a number of academic members to the training program that is organized by the University of Essex. Consequently, the program will qualify our academic members to guide and administer the higher studies program that will be established as a result of this project.
[+] Criteria for Selected Post-Graduate Students
- A good degree (preferably a higher degree) in computer science or engineering sciences.
- A good knowledge of Intelligent Environment computing techniques.
- Excellent practical skills in programming and assembling networked embedded computer systems.
- A strong interest in interdisciplinary matters such as building architecture or socio-technical issues.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to meetings and conferences (eg to Saudi Arabia).
- Good analytical and organisational skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
[+] Diversity Impacts on the Project Outcome
In the selection phase of the Ph.D students, we were mainly looking for the high educational qualification students. After the Ph.D students were selected we realized that we gained an extra value, we gained "Diversity". Having people from different cultures means different backgrounds, perspectives, viewpoints, ideas and experiences which helped us to create an innovative, creative, and productive environment.
